The Chronicles of Photo and Video

History of Photo

Ancient Record

Thanks to the inventive craft of an Iraqi scientist, camera obscura was created in the 11th century. This device did not permanently record the photos since the images were only projected on a flat surface, yet such creation initiated photography. By 17th century, portable camera was the device that highlighted the era.

Lasting Images

In 1826, the first permanent image created by a portable camera obscura utilized the pewter plate to expose it to the light. Discovered by a French citizen, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce; he utilized a camera and a photosensitive paper to document a still image permanently. Furthermore, in 1834, Henry Fox Talbot invented the first permanent negative image by submerging the photo paper in a solution of chlorine and salt.

Emulsion Plates and Color Combination

Utilizing the Collodion process, the portrait photos were images developed instantaneously in less than three seconds. Meanwhile, Scottish physicist James Clerk-Maxwell showed black and white photos filtered in color shades green, red, or blue.

Dry Plate and Kodak Camera

In 1871, Richard Leach Maddox promulgated the use of dry plate instead of emulsion. This method enabled photo storage. Later on, the company Kodak commercially released a portable camera and roll of film.

Instant Photos

In 1960s, the advent of colored pictures was Polaroid’s discovery. Concurrently, the taken images were instantaneously developed which awed many people worldwide.

Smart Camera

In the beginning of 1980s, smart camera conquered the commercial market due to the remarkable features. This camera had features that control the image, background, color, and resolution of the photo.

Digital Camera

With superb resolution, digital camera conquered the photography arena. The photos are developed digitally instead in films. Also, the images can be altered and enhanced using computer programs and camera revision setting.

History of Video

Still Image Combination

Developed from the creation of camera, video camera began its innovation as early as the 1830. During this time, the images were produced per revolution of the drum and disk. By 1872, the used of stereoscopic camera heralded the first motion picture that featured the horse, Sally Gardner.

Chronophotographic Camera

Considered as the precursor of modern video camera, chronophotographic camera can take ten photos per second through a celluloid film.

Kinetograph

Developed by W.K.L. Dickson in 1891, Kinetograph was a series of celluloid films linked together to create a motion picture. The viewer had to insert one’s head on a covered box to appreciate the film.

Electrotachyscope

Ottomar Anschütz developed Electrotachyscope in 1887 after wanting to create a film that can be seen by a large number of spectators. This device utilized 24 images placed on a rotating disk.

Electromechanical Video

Early years of the 1930s, videos were recorded via an electromechanical video. The images, then, were pictures which illustrated variety of programs.

Smart Video Camera

Similar to the still camera, smart video camera allowed recording of motion pictures through the use of a tape. This device allowed any individual to record personal events and companies to film video productions.

Digital Video Recorder

Filming motion pictures using a digital video recorded advanced the images captured. The high resolution and edit feature allow immediate video production.
